ATR 72MP

The ATR 72MP is a multirole Maritime Patrol, Electronic Surveillance and C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence) aircraft with very affordable costs, developed and built by Leonardo’s Aircraft Division from the platform of the modern ATR 72-600 regional turboprop.
The Italian Air Force is the launch customer, with four aircraft. The primary ATR 72MP duties are: maritime patrol for surface vessel search and identification, warfare command and control, electronic intelligence, search and rescue (SAR), prevention of piracy, smuggling and narcotics trafficking, and territorial water security. It can also carry personnel and paratroops.
The mission system is based on four state-of-the-art operator stations, using a significant upgrade of the proven Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance (ATOS) mission system of Leonardo’s Airborne & Space Systems Division.  A complete C4I systems suite is available: multi-datalink fully integrating  Link 16, Link 11, Satcom Ku/Ka, VORTEX, VMF and Radar Classifier, in addition to ESM ELINT (Electronic Support Measures – ELectronic INTelligence) capabilities.
The ATOS mission system is fully integrated with a militarised ATR-600 Glass Cockpit, (including TACAN, two SAASM VI INS/GPS and one IFF TX) and a radio management system so that  4 V/UHF and 2 HF Radios can be controlled by the mission system operators and also from the cockpit. The system integrates three main sensors, the Star Safire HD electro-optical turret; the Selex ES Seaspray 7300 electronically-scanned array search radar and the self-protection suite based on the Elettronica ELT800V2 ESM, providing the ATOS mission system with the capability to fully manage the tactical scenario with Radio Frequency tracks and enabling ELINT mission tasks.
The Self-Protection System suite, derived from the one that equips the C-27J Spartan battlefield airlifter, includes chaff & flare dispensers, missile and laser warning systems and a new RWR/ESM with ELINT and geo-localisation capabilities. The suite is integrated by a new DASS Management Computer and operated from the cockpit via a dedicated DASS display unit and DASS control panel.
The configuration also includes an Automatic Identification System (AIS), and a C-SAR ASARS (radio and satellite secure communications crypto devices).
The ATR 72MP system fully meets the most stringent requirements for hardware and software security.
The ATR 72 is a twin-engine turboprop, short-haul regional airliner developed and produced in France and Italy by aircraft manufacturer ATR (Aerei da Trasporto Regionale or Avions de transport régional), a joint venture formed by French aerospace company Aérospatiale (now Airbus) and Italian aviation conglomerate Aeritalia (now Leonardo S.p.A.). The number "72" in its name is derived from the aircraft's standard seating configuration in a passenger-carrying configuration, which could seat 72–78 passengers in a single-class arrangement.

ATR 42MP

The ATR 42MP Surveyor is an affordable maritime patrol aircraft, developed and built by Leonardo’s Aircraft Division from the airframe of the proven ATR 42 twin-turboprop regional aircraft. The aircraft has been ordered by four Air Forces in three countries: Italy, Nigeria and Libya.
Endowed with built-in flexibility and multirole capabilities, the Surveyor is fully civil-certified. Its main roles are maritime patrol for surface vessel search and identification, search and rescue (SAR), prevention of piracy, contraband and narcotics smuggling, environmental monitoring and disaster clean up (against oil or chemical spills), territorial water security. The aircraft can also be reconfigured in a few hours to carry personnel, paratroopers, and cargo or for medical evacuation or to drop emergency kits.
At the heart of the ATR 42MP is the Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance System (ATOS), further strengthened by sophisticated navigation and communications systems. The Surveyor is also equipped with a flight-operable door (or, alternatively, a rear belly hatch) to drop emergency kits, large observation windows and fuselage pylons to carry a night searchlight or other equipment.
The ATOS, designed and built by Leonardo’s Airborne & Space Systems Division, includes two operator stations and manages a sensor suite which comprises multi-mode radar, electro-optical IR turret, color and b/w cameras, Automatic Identification System (AIS), Direction Finder (DF) and video recording equipment. With its modular architecture, the ATOS allows the entire surveillance system to be easily tailored to specific customer requirements, for instance by integrating Electronic Support Measures (ESM) or other subsystems and sensors.

The ATR 42 is a twin-turboprop, short-haul regional airliner developed and manufactured in France and Italy by ATR (Aerei da Trasporto Regionale or Avions de transport régional), a joint venture formed by French aerospace company Aérospatiale (now Airbus) and Italian aviation conglomerate Aeritalia (now Leonardo S.p.A.). The number "42" in its name is derived from the aircraft's standard seating configuration in a passenger-carrying configuration, which typically varies between 40 and 52 passengers.

ATR 42–600

The ATR 42 is a twin-turboprop, short-haul regional airliner built in France and Italy by ATR (Aerei da Trasporto Regionale or Avions de transport régional). ATR and some Airbus models have their final assembly in Toulouse, and share resources and technology. The name "42" comes from the aircraft's standard seating, which varies from 40 to 52. The aircraft serves as the basis for the ATR 72.
On 2 October 2007, ATR CEO Stéphane Mayer announced the launch of the new −600 series aircraft at a press conference held in Washington, D.C.

The new ATR 42–600 and ATR 72–600 will feature technological enhancements to the current aircraft to increase its efficiency, dispatch reliability, low fuel burn and operating cost. It will include the new PW127M as standard engine (new engines provide 5% additional thermodynamic power at takeoff, thus improving performance on short runways, in hot weather and on high altitude; the incorporation of the "boost function" enables use of this additional power as needed, only when called for by the takeoff conditions), Glass Cockpit flight deck featuring five wide LCD screens that will replace the current EFIS (Electronic Flight Instrument System). In addition, a Multi-Purpose Computer (MPC) will further enhance flight safety and operational capabilities. The new avionics, to be supplied by Thales, will also provide CAT III and RNP capabilities. It will also include the new lighter and more comfortable seats and larger overhead baggage bins.

Using a temporary test registration F-WWLY the prototype ATR 42–600 first flew on 4 March 2010. The first aircraft was delivered to Tanzanian airline Precision Air in November 2012.

According to the ATR42 & 72 EASA Type Certificate Data Sheet TCDS A.084, Iss 3, 17-10-2012 ), "ATR 42-600" is the manufacturer's marketing designation of ATR 42-500 aircraft model with the NAS (New Avionic Suite, or 'Glass Cockpit') modification installed. The "ATR 42-600" marketing designation is not recognised by EASA as any new certified aircraft model or variant, and must not be used on ATR certified/approved documentation, where only "Mod 5948", "ATR 42-500 with Mod 5948", "ATR 42-500 fitted with NAS", or ATR 42-500 "600 version" must be indicated.

The ATR 72-500 is powered by PW127F engines and provides outstanding short field performance for an aircraft of this size, even on difficult hot and high airfields.
The operational weights comply with the new regulations increasing the standard passenger weight and provide the ATR 72-500 with a maximum range of 890 Nm or an out and return trip of 420 Nm (without refueling), both being at full passenger payload. The ATR 72 secondary structures are extensively made of corrosion-resistant composite material. In addition, the ATR 72 innovates by the use of carbon fiber for its outer wings and a composite tail, thus reducing weight further.
The ATR 72-500 incorporates:
  • Totally renewed cabin interior design
  • Technologically advanced acoustic treatment
  • New propeller system
  • Excellent field performance
The ATR 72-500 is a fully mature and technically proven aircraft recognized worldwide for cost-efficiency and reliability ensuring low risk choice and strong residual value for regional airlines.

The ATR 72-500 provides passengers with an on-board comfort and services comparable to the jetliner
  • High cruise ceiling of about 7,000 m (21,000 ft) with inherent stability
  • Large overhead bins including a handrail to facilitate passengers and crew movement along the cabin
  • Optimized view (more windows than rows of seats)
  • Individual reading lights and cabin attendant call system
  • A quiet, comfortable and spacious cabin with a new design
  • In-flight Entertainment System
A range of improvements in the field of noise and vibration reduction has been implemented in the ATR 72-500, namely:

ATR has always made optimal use of advanced technologies providing fuel-efficient aircraft to the airline industry. ATR aims at furthering its contribution to ensure a sustainable future for the aviation industry, and reconciling air transport growth while minimizing environmental impact.
Highly efficient and operating at lower speeds, ATR aircraft contribute to a small fraction of aircraft attributable emissions. They operate at low altitudes, have no effect on the ozone layer and upper atmosphere, and provide optimized capacity to adapt frequencies to the regional airlines requirements.
Material, procedures and technologies used to produce ATR aircraft are constantly improved and monitored to minimize environmental impact across the entire life cycle:
  • Optimizing aircraft design continuously to reduce weight, fuel consumption, noise and pollutant emissions
  • Integrating end-of-life issues from the very start of aircraft design
  • Reducing waste production at source and increasing waste recycling rates.
The latest propulsion technology, combined with optimally designed high-lift systems, make ATR -500 New Generation aircraft quiet neighboors. They meet ICAO noise requirements with wide margins, hence keeping  the environmental impact to a minimum.
The ATR 72-500 is more efficient than regional jet aircraft on short-haul routes. On a 200-Nm sector, the ATR 72 fuel consumption per passenger is 16% lower than a typical European car and 60% better than a typical 70-seater jet.
ATR 72-500 emits about 50% less CO2 per passenger-km than new-generation jets and up to three times less CO2 than older ones. Compared to a car, the ATR 72-500's carbone dioxyde (CO2) emissions per seat/km on a 200-Nm (370 km) sector are 15% lower.
With the turboprop, the future is looking bright for the Kyoto Protocol.

Since its introduction, ATR 72-500 has become the regional air transport industry reference for reliability and profitability, providing unmatched seat mile cost and unbeatable cost-efficiency.
ATR 72-500 is known to be the most profitable mean to transport 70 passengers on short-haul sectors. The aircraft features the lowest seat-mile costs in its market segment.
It features exceptional economics when compared to similar sized turboprop and jet competitors on typical regional sectors: on 200 Nm, ATR 72 operating costs are about 18% lower than its direct competitor, and up to 40% more economic than a similar sized regional jet.
The ATR 72-500 provides:
  • Lower engine and airframe maintenance costs
  • Less fuel costs
  • Significantly lower airport charges
  • A speed  suited to regional low-cost operation
